Low Poly Battleship Models (˜500tris) - Need some(lots?) advice

Hello,

I've been learning blender for the last 3 months, basically with the main purpose of creating some game game assets for iPhone/iPad projects.

A few days ago, I found this forum, and at same time, I found that my models are pretty crap if compared with most of things posted here.

While I feel shamed to post so poor art, I really have no choice: I need some critics. I need lots of advices.
I hit a wall and I can't get thru.

My first finished mode is my reference on where I want to get, what style the may have:

I'm aiming for a toon-ish style, but I'm not planing on using toon-shading.
The UV was all made by hand, and by hand I mean it literally: I printed the UV Map, draw with a pencil, scanned and then colored using Photoshop.

Another model, same style, same technic...

Wireframe:

... but looks poor.

I dont like the idea of the "boxed" cabin, and so shard edges, but I'm already hitting the 500 tris and still a little far from what I have been imagine.

Oh, one last thing, all this ships will be 8x smaller then this renders.
